France: Drivers use rapeseed oil to bypass high diesel prices
Due to rising diesel prices in France, which have reached approximately 2.41 euros per liter, some motorists are attempting to use supermarket rapeseed oil as a cheaper alternative. Rapeseed oil is currently priced between 1.45 and 1.53 euros per liter, offering a theoretical saving of over 40 euros for a 50-liter tank.
Videos of drivers pouring food-grade oil into diesel tanks have circulated on social media. However, experts warn that this is a “false good idea.” Rapeseed oil has a higher viscosity than diesel, which can quickly clog the fuel injection systems of modern engines, particularly those manufactured after 2000, leading to expensive repairs to fuel pumps and nozzles.
Beyond mechanical risks, the practice is illegal. French customs and tax authorities view the use of rapeseed oil as a customs violation. Penalties can include fines starting at 200 euros, demands for unpaid taxes, or, in severe cases, vehicle confiscation. Additionally, insurance companies may refuse to cover damages if an accident is linked to the use of unauthorized fuel.
