France drought triggers water restrictions and economic crisis

Severe drought conditions in France, driven by successive heatwaves throughout the summer of 2026, have led to unprecedented water restrictions. In the Saône-et-Loire department, 43% of watercourses reached a state of complete dryness in September, prompting the prefect to reinforce restrictions and place the ‘Dheune’ sector in a crisis level. These measures prohibit non-essential water usage to protect drinking water supplies and aquatic environments.

The drought has caused a significant economic crisis for the professional car wash industry. According to a survey by Mobilians involving over 1,400 operators across 61 departments, 87% of surveyed centers reported being impacted by water restrictions. The financial consequences are severe, with one in two operators estimating a loss of at least 80% of their turnover since August 1. Many businesses have been forced to halt operations, with 66% of operators reporting the complete shutdown of at least one washing bay.
