France expands drowning‑prevention measures with mobile pools and safety campaigns
The French Ministry of Solidarity and Health, together with the Ministry of Sports and Santé publique France, has renewed its summer drowning‑prevention campaign, urging the public to learn to swim, supervise children, use monitored swimming areas, avoid alcohol and follow emergency numbers (112 in Europe, 196 at sea). Recommendations also cover pool safety, such as constant adult supervision and the use of safety devices.
Local initiatives reinforce the national effort. In Strasbourg, the "Carava’nage" project deploys a mobile pool built from two shipping containers to visit all 33 municipalities, offering free 40‑minute lessons to children aged 4‑6 from isolated neighborhoods, reaching about 300 youngsters each summer. The association "Sea Lou" travels the southwestern French coast to warn about dangerous baïnes after a fatal incident, teaching beachgoers how to recognize and react to strong currents. The French Federation of Lifesaving and Rescue (FFMNS) promotes a national day of drowning prevention, providing guidance to aquatic centers and tourists, while the Federation of Pool Professionals supplies new pool owners with a "Vigiplouf" safety kit.
These coordinated actions aim to reduce the high rate of drownings in France, where half of the population lacks adequate swimming skills.
