France expands youth military service amid colonial history concerns
The expansion of military involvement with youth in France is being analyzed through its historical roots in colonial practices. The government has announced the launch of the Service national volontaire (SNV), a redesigned military service intended to host 3,000 young people in 2026, with a goal of reaching 50,000 by 2035.
Critics link these modern initiatives to the Service militaire adapté (SMA), a program experimented with in French overseas territories for 65 years. Historically, the SMA served as a tool for political neutralization and assimilation during periods of anti-colonial unrest. Current programs, such as the Epide and the existing voluntary military service, are viewed by some as transpositions of these colonial-era methods into mainland France, specifically targeting precarious youth.
