French voluntary national military service program

Overview

France has initiated a new voluntary national service program designed to bolster military readiness and strengthen citizen-military bonds. Replacing the previously discarded Universal National Service, this ten-month program targets young adults aged 18 to 25. Participants receive a monthly stipend of approximately €800, along with food, clothing, and accommodation.

The program includes five weeks of basic military training, covering discipline, physical conditioning, and weapons handling. While the initiative aims to create a pool of recruits for professional service or reserves, all assignments are currently restricted to French territory.

The government intends to scale the program from an initial cohort of 3,000 to 10,000 participants annually, with a long-term target of 50,000 per year by 2035. Early implementation is already underway, with approximately 100 volunteers—including one-third women—beginning training at the Évreux Air Base. The Air and Space Force alone is hosting 600 recruits during this term.
