However, the expansion has faced criticism regarding its historical context. Some observers have linked the initiative to the Service militaire adapté (SMA), a program previously used in French overseas territories. Critics argue that these modern efforts may serve as a transposition of colonial-era methods intended for political neutralization and social assimilation, specifically targeting precarious youth in mainland France.
