France extends 100-euro fuel subsidy deadline to August 31

The French government has extended the deadline for the ‘aide grands rouleurs’ fuel subsidy to August 31, 2026. Originally set to expire on July 30, the extension follows reports that fewer than 40% of eligible applicants had submitted their files by mid-July.

The 100-euro subsidy is designed to assist low-income workers, including employees, independent contractors, artisans, and farmers, who face high commuting costs. To qualify, individuals must have a tax reference income per share not exceeding 16,880 euros and must either travel at least 30 kilometers round-trip daily for work or exceed 8,000 kilometers annually for professional activities. The aid is restricted to those using thermal or non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles.

Announced by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, the measure aims to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While the subsidy provides approximately 20 cents per liter, officials note that its impact on overall purchasing power remains limited relative to the significant rise in diesel and gasoline prices.
