France faces intensifying drought and severe water restrictions
France is facing an intensifying drought characterized by record-low rainfall and extreme temperatures. In northern regions, Dunkirk has recorded 47 consecutive days without rain, surpassing its 1962 record. Paris has also seen rainfall levels 80 percent below the 50-year average for the period between June and mid-August.
Authorities have implemented significant water restrictions across various departments. In Haute-Garonne, crisis-level restrictions affect the Volp, Tescou, and Salat basins. Ille-et-Vilaine has also issued new prohibitions covering garden watering, swimming pool maintenance, and vehicle washing. In the Somme region, municipalities in Fort-Mahon-Plage and Quend-Plage have banned access to dunes to prevent fires caused by cigarette butts and smoke bombs.
The drought is impacting infrastructure and ecology. While many inland waterway cruises remain operational, the Voies Navigables de France (VNF) has had to close certain canal sections, such as parts of the Canal de Bourgogne, due to dropping water levels. Climatologists describe the current summer as exceptional due to the combination of high heat and severe water scarcity.
