France faces fuel shortages as diesel prices hit record high

France is facing significant fuel supply tensions as diesel prices hit a record high of 2.41 euros per liter on September 20. This represents a weekly increase of 10.5 cents and surpasses the previous peak seen in April.

The Ministry of Economy reports that approximately 10,000 gas stations across the country—roughly 15% of the total—are experiencing shortages of gasoline, diesel, or both. While Economy Minister Roland Lescure stated that France does not currently face a systemic supply problem, he emphasized the need to find solutions if conflicts in the Middle East persist. He also noted that there would be no general tax cuts despite public discontent.

Industry figures suggest the shortage is heavily concentrated within TotalEnergies stations, which reportedly account for 86% of the fuel scarcity. The crisis is linked to decreased tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the shutdown of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline following drone attacks from Iraq.
