France faces mass unrest as protests over cost of living turn violent

Massive nationwide protests in France over the rising cost of living, housing issues, and public service cuts have escalated into widespread violence, looting, and arson. Approximately 550,000 to 800,000 people participated in demonstrations across various cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Limoges.

In Limoges, protesters set fire to a 19th-century city hall, causing its roof to collapse. Authorities reported significant damage to businesses and government buildings. The unrest has resulted in at least 1,800 to 2,397 arrests nationwide. Law enforcement and emergency responders have suffered heavy casualties, with reports indicating nearly 1,000 security personnel injured.

President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to take legal action against those responsible for the destruction, stating that those who attacked government offices and businesses will face prosecution. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez attributed the violence to “radical leftist groups” and noted that others joined in to loot shops. In response to the instability, authorities in Marseille have banned all gatherings and demonstrations for specific periods.
