France climate costs reach 16 billion euros in summer 2026

A parliamentary mission in France has estimated that the combined impact of heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires during the summer of 2026 cost the country approximately 16 billion euros. This figure, presented by deputy Éric Coquerel, exceeds previous government estimates of 10 to 15 billion euros.

The economic impact includes a reduction in GDP growth of about 0.1 points, valued at nearly 3 billion euros. Public spending saw an unplanned increase of at least 2.5 billion euros, which includes 1.3 billion euros in agricultural aid, 700 million euros for health services, and 300 million euros related to fire management.

The agricultural sector remains the hardest hit. While agricultural unions estimate total losses at roughly 10 billion euros, the parliamentary mission calculates the net loss at 8.7 billion euros after accounting for government subsidies. Additionally, farmers have expressed significant dissatisfaction with the use of satellite imagery to determine aid eligibility, claiming the technology fails to reflect the actual conditions of their pastures and crops on the ground.
