France faces rise in drone-based prison smuggling

Organized criminal networks in France are increasingly using drones to smuggle contraband, including drugs, mobile phones, SIM cards, and alcohol, into prisons. This trend shows a growing level of professionalization, with suspects often operating in structured roles ranging from logistics to delivery.

In Villefranche-sur-Saône, authorities uncovered a massive trafficking operation where investigators estimated over 1,800 drone drops occurred in less than two months. A recent police operation led to the arrest of five individuals and the seizure of 500 grams of cannabis, cigarettes, cash, and a drone. Digital analysis of the device revealed that more than 30 kilograms of drugs were delivered during this period.

The issue has also caused safety concerns outside of correctional facilities. In Strasbourg, drone activity near the Strasbourg-Elsau remand prison has disrupted medical services. Drones have prevented emergency helicopters from landing at the Hautepierre hospital helipad at night, creating a significant risk of collision for medical transport.
