Drug trafficking and drone smuggling enforcement in France
Overview
French law enforcement has conducted several operations targeting drug trafficking networks. In Angoulême, 35-year-old Émile Simile was sentenced to two years in prison and a two-year ban from the towns of Angoulême and Soyaux after surveillance footage showed him hiding 39g of cannabis in a planter. In a separate enforcement action in Normandy, authorities confiscated a high-performance Audi RS3 used by a trafficker; the vehicle was refurbished and assigned to the gendarmerie’s rapid-intervention team to assist in pursuing traffic offenses.
Authorities also dismantled an organized criminal network operating at the Villefranche-sur-Saône prison. The group used drones to deliver approximately 1,826 illicit packages to the facility over a 51-day period, averaging 36 deliveries per day. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals, including one minor, and the seizure of 500 grams of cannabis, 6,000 euros in cash, and specialized drone equipment. Investigators estimate that roughly 30 kilograms of cannabis resin were introduced into the facility during this time.
This incident reflects a broader trend of increasing drone-related smuggling in the French prison system, with recorded drone flights rising from over 800 in 2024 to more than 5,000 in early 2025. These networks are becoming increasingly professionalized, smuggling drugs, mobile phones, and alcohol. Beyond prison security, drone activity has caused safety concerns in Strasbourg, where flights near the Strasbourg-Elsau remand prison have disrupted emergency medical helicopter landings at the Hautepierre hospital helipad.
