Western Europe drought causes water crises and reveals Roman ruins

Western Europe is facing a severe drought that is impacting water supplies, agriculture, and revealing historical sites. In France, extreme water scarcity has led to critical alerts in regions like Loire-Atlantique and Calvados. Approximately 3 million people are under vigilance, with some areas facing level 4 drinking water crises and potential shortages in urban centers. The agricultural sector is suffering significant losses, particularly in crop yields and livestock feed production.

In response to the shortage, French retailers have adjusted standards to allow smaller or heat-marked fruits and vegetables to remain on shelves to support producers. Authorities are also urging citizens to adopt water-saving behaviors to prevent further depletion of the Loire basin.

In Italy, the drought has caused the Tiber River to drop to exceptionally low levels. In Rome, this has exposed the remains of an ancient Roman bridge built during the reign of Emperor Nero, which once connected the city to the Vatican area. The reappearance of the Pons Neronianus provides a rare historical sight for tourists amidst the ongoing environmental crisis.
