France faces severe water shortages as drought persists

France continues to face significant water shortages due to historic drought conditions and record-high summer temperatures. Ecological Transition Minister Monique Barbut reported that 64,000 people in metropolitan France remain without running tap water, requiring supplies via water tankers or bottled water.

Approximately 6.4 million residents are currently under water distribution vigilance, indicating that while supply is normal, the resource is fragile. According to the national geological service BRGM, 61% of groundwater tables are below normal levels. In response, the government is working on a national climate change adaptation plan, which includes a specific focus on accelerating the reuse of treated wastewater.

In the Vendée region, authorities have returned to a ‘reinforced alert’ status for drinking water due to five consecutive months of rainfall deficits. While recent precipitation provided slight relief, it was insufficient to restore natural environments or stabilize water reserves, which currently sit at only 42% of their available volume. Consequently, restrictions have been implemented, including bans on certain types of vehicle washing.
