France faces uneven drought relief following heterogeneous rainfall
Recent rainfall in France has provided uneven relief following a period of severe drought. While precipitation between September 28 and 30 offered some respite, the distribution was highly heterogeneous. Some western and southwestern sectors received between 20 and 40 mm, while the Languedoc and Cévennes regions experienced intense Mediterranean episodes with over 100 mm in plains and up to 300 mm in mountainous areas.
Despite these localized gains, much of the country remains in a deficit. In central and eastern regions, only a few millimeters were recorded, which is insufficient to replenish deep soil moisture. In the Orne department of Normandy, September saw an exceptional rainfall deficit of 71%, marking one of the driest Septembers on record. Consequently, local authorities in Orne have maintained strict water restrictions for individuals, farmers, and industries to manage critical river flow levels.
