France firefighting resources under debate following summer wildfires

French firefighting services are facing scrutiny regarding resources and safety following a summer of significant wildfires. The CFDT Interco union met with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on August 13 to discuss the modernization of civil security. While the government proposed several avenues, including a new modernization law (MOSC2) and evolving financial resources, the union is calling for more concrete actions and specific commitments.

Key concerns raised by the union include the health and safety of personnel, specifically the need for improved respiratory and ocular protection due to rising cases of carbon monoxide poisoning.

In a separate discussion regarding regional capabilities, Grégory Allione, honorary president of the National Federation of Firefighters, stated that France contributes three to four times more to the European Civil Protection Mechanism than its neighbors. However, data suggests disparities in aerial firefighting assets; for instance, France possesses fewer Canadair aircraft compared to Italy and Spain, despite having a comparable total fleet of bombers and helicopters.
