France forest fires trigger surge in volunteer firefighter applications
Massive forest fires in 2026, which have burned over 120,000 hectares across France, have triggered a significant surge in applications for volunteer firefighter positions.
In the Gironde department, where 42,000 hectares were destroyed, the Service départemental d’incendie et de secours (Sdis) reported receiving 470 applications since July 22. This is a substantial increase compared to the typical 70 applications received during the same period. Similar trends have been noted in Meurthe-et-Moselle, where inquiries and engagement requests have increased tenfold.
Officials suggest this spike in interest reflects a public desire to be useful and engage in aid efforts during times of catastrophe, a phenomenon previously observed during the COVID-19 pandemic and various conflicts.
