Overview

Massive forest fires in France have burned over 120,000 hectares, prompting a significant surge in applications for volunteer firefighter positions. In the Gironde department, where 42,000 hectares were destroyed, the Service départemental d’incendie et de secours (Sdis) reported receiving 470 applications since July 22, a substantial increase from the typical 70 applications received during the same period. Similar tenfold increases in engagement requests were noted in Meurthe-et-Moselle.

As the fires progressed, volunteer firefighters from other regions, such as Doubs, were deployed to provide reinforcements. These teams, including those sent to the Landes de Gascogne megafire, focused on surveillance and the protection of urban areas.
