France fuel crisis threatens transport jobs and drives illegal fuel use
The French road transport sector is facing a severe financial crisis driven by a 46% surge in diesel prices between August 2025 and August 2026. According to the Comité national routier, the rising costs are eroding the thin profit margins of the 3,600 companies represented by the OTRE, which employs 110,000 people. Industry groups OTRE and FAI warn that transporters can no longer absorb these costs and are calling for transport rates that cover expenses and allow for necessary investments.
The crisis threatens both employment and the green energy transition. High fuel costs prevent companies from investing in fleet renewals or electric vehicles, while delayed government aid has exacerbated liquidity issues. Only 16% of companies requesting aid in May received it, compared to 80% for April.
On an individual level, high fuel prices—with diesel nearing €2.40 per liter—have led some motorists to seek illegal alternatives to save money. This includes using non-road diesel (GNR), which is taxed at a lower rate but reserved for agricultural and industrial machinery, or even using used frying oil. While these methods offer immediate savings, they carry legal risks under the Customs Code and potential mechanical damage to vehicles.
