France fuel prices rise, impacting millions of households

Fuel prices in France have risen significantly, with diesel averaging approximately 2.29 euros per liter and E10 gasoline at 2.12 euros. According to data from INSEE, nearly 5 million French households now spend more than one month's worth of annual income on fuel, a figure that has doubled since 2021.

The impact is disproportionately felt in rural areas, where 16.7% of motorized households are highly exposed to these costs, compared to 9.0% in urban environments. These households spend an average of 2,700 euros annually on fuel, nearly double the national average of 1,380 euros.

Economic experts, including Anne-Sophie Alsif of BDO France, have called for targeted government assistance for the most vulnerable households rather than universal subsidies. The French government attributes the price volatility to energy market tensions, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, geopolitical conflicts involving the United States and Iran, and refinery production bottlenecks. While existing aid has been extended to certain sectors like agriculture, many private households remain limited in the benefits they receive.
