France and Spain face sharp weather shift after record heat

France and parts of Spain are experiencing a dramatic weather shift as a period of record-breaking heat gives way to cooler, unstable conditions. Météo-France reported that the summer of 2026 was the hottest ever recorded in the country since 1900, with average 24-hour temperatures reaching 24°C and the 40°C threshold being crossed 178 times.

Following a recent heatwave that saw several departments in southern France under orange heat alerts, a significant drop in temperature is expected. Temperatures are projected to fall by 10 to 15°C within 48 hours as a low-pressure system moves in. This transition will bring heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with gusts potentially reaching 90 km/h in coastal areas like Brittany.

In Spain, the weather is also changing, particularly in the north where a front is bringing rain and a notable decrease in maximum temperatures. While northern regions see cooling, some southern areas continue to experience high heat. The arrival of this cooler, wetter air marks a sharp seasonal transition across much of the Iberian Peninsula and France.
