France heatwave sleep advice warns against open windows at night
During periods of extreme heat, many people in France keep bedroom windows open overnight in the belief that it will cool the room and improve sleep. Sleep specialists note that when outdoor temperatures remain high after sunset, opening windows often fails to lower indoor temperature to the recommended 16‑19 °C range, leading to continued discomfort, increased noise exposure, allergens, and insect intrusion, all of which can fragment sleep cycles and reduce rest quality.
Psychological research also highlights the impact of bedroom door position on sleep. Closing the door can create a sense of security, limit noise and interruptions, and provide personal space, which may help reduce stress and support more restorative sleep. These habits reflect broader needs for personal safety and solitude rather than merely temperature control.
