France heatwave spurs health guidance on cramps and swollen ankles
During the current heatwave, French health experts explain that muscle cramps are mainly caused by rapid loss of sodium through sweat. A study shows that drinking about 25 ml of pickle juice can stop a cramp within seconds, while lightly salted water, bananas or magnesium supplements either act only preventively or carry risks for certain groups. The Ministry of Health advises regular water intake, modestly salted meals and avoiding excessive fluid dilution.
Similarly, doctors note that ankle swelling in hot weather is often a benign heat‑induced edema, but it warrants medical attention if it appears suddenly, is asymmetric, painful, red, or accompanied by shortness of breath or chest pain. Recommended measures include elevating the legs, regular movement, limiting salty foods, staying hydrated and, for those with known venous insufficiency, wearing compression stockings.
Both articles stress monitoring symptoms and seeking care promptly when warning signs emerge.
