France: Nationwide protests erupt following racist terror attack in Yvelines

Following a fatal shooting in Trappes and La Verrière on October 23, numerous cities across France have held rallies to denounce racism and Islamophobia. The attack, which killed 26-year-old MMA fighter Pengo Bossio Wangi and injured five others including a 12-year-old girl, is being investigated by the Parquet national antiterroriste (PNAT) as a terrorist attack with racist motives.

Protests and vigils took place in Paris, Toulouse, Tours, Marseille, Lyon, and several other regions. Demonstrators, supported by organizations such as SOS Racisme and the Ligue des droits de l’Homme, criticized the normalization of hate speech in media and politics. In Paris, a large gathering was organized at Place de Stalingrad.

The suspect, 39-year-old Kevin T., was apprehended in Coignières. While he reportedly targeted Black and Arab individuals, his custody was lifted for psychiatric reasons. A copy of ‘Mein Kampf’ was also discovered at his residence. In response to the tragedy, National Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet has indicated she will propose a minute of silence in the legislature.
