France housing crisis: high demand and vacant property challenges

France is facing a significant housing crisis characterized by high demand and limited availability. Approximately 2.9 million households are currently waiting for social housing, with demand having increased by 60% since 2013.

While there are nearly 3 million vacant properties in the country, they are not immediately available for rent due to various obstacles. These include the need for expensive renovations to meet energy performance standards, fears of unpaid rent or property damage, and legal complexities such as inheritance issues. In high-demand urban areas, the shortage is particularly acute for students and young workers, many of whom are forced to remain in their parental homes.

Political figures are proposing various solutions for the 2027 elections, including rent controls, housing shields based on income, and increased support for property renovations to combat energy inefficiency.
