France implements water restrictions and crisis drills amid drought

Authorities in France are implementing various measures to manage water scarcity caused by drought. In the Alpes-Maritimes department, 110 municipalities are subject to restrictions. These measures vary by severity level: 21 municipalities are on alert, 46 are on heightened alert, and 43 are in a crisis situation. Restrictions include prohibitions on filling individual pools, washing vehicles at home, and watering green spaces or vegetable gardens during specific hours. In crisis zones, car wash centers without recycling systems must also close.

In the La Manche department, authorities are conducting a crisis management exercise in the communes of Carolles and Jullouville from October 12 to 14. The simulation involves reducing water network pressure between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. for three consecutive days to test the feasibility of managing water shortages and to prepare for potential total water cuts. The exercise aims to evaluate the impact on vulnerable populations and the logistics required for water distribution during periods of extreme tension on resources.
