France intensifies surveillance to curb migrant crossings to the UK

France has intensified surveillance in strategic locations such as Dunkirk and Calais to prevent migrants from attempting to cross the English Channel to the United Kingdom. Recent operations have seen authorities intercepting groups, including approximately 40 individuals who were detained after attempting to hide in a greenhouse to evade security forces.

British government data indicates that the number of people arriving in small boats decreased by 43% up to August, falling from approximately 29,000 in the same period in 2022 to 16,500. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez attributed this decline to increased cooperation between France and the United Kingdom and heightened controls on French territory.

Despite these measures, the migration route remains active. Smuggling networks are reportedly adapting by using different coastal areas and larger vessels, including “water taxis” designed to collect migrants in locations far from police surveillance. Recent incidents have also highlighted the dangers of the route, including reports of fatalities and individuals requiring rescue during crossing attempts.
