France launches aid plan for farmers amid heatwave, drought and fires
A severe heatwave and prolonged drought are affecting 98 French departments, with 57 placed in a state of crisis. Crops across the country have suffered major losses – in Brittany vegetable yields fell to about 30 % of forecast and some produce prices have doubled – while livestock farms face water shortages and reduced milk output. Farmers report tens of millions of euros in losses and fear bankruptcies.
The French government has responded by activating a national “Sécheresse” cell within the Ministry of Agriculture and by preparing a comprehensive “Canicule‑Sécheresse‑Incendies” (CASI) support plan. The plan, announced by Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard, includes emergency cash‑flow assistance, coverage of social contributions, regulatory simplifications and measures to adapt water management. Prefects have been asked to appoint departmental drought referents and to coordinate local response teams with agricultural organisations.
Industry representatives such as Cyril Pogu, co‑president of Légumes de France, and Patrick Legras, vice‑president of Agriculteurs en colère, have called for immediate emergency aid and long‑term investment in irrigation infrastructure, noting that only 15 % of vegetable areas in Brittany are currently irrigated.
