France marks 10th anniversary of Nice attack with minute of silence before World Cup semifinal

On July 14, 2026 France commemorated the tenth anniversary of the 2016 Nice terrorist attack that killed 86 people and injured hundreds. President Emmanuel Macron announced that a minute of silence will be observed before the France‑Spain semifinal of the 2026 World Cup, thanking FIFA for permitting the tribute. The remembrance includes lighting 86 beams on the promenade, an inter‑religious ceremony and public gatherings. The 2016 attack was carried out by Mohamed Lahouaiej‑Bouhlel, claimed by ISIS, and several accomplices have since been sentenced. The minute of silence is intended to honor the victims and demonstrate the solidarity of the football community with those affected by terrorism.
