Nice marks 10‑year anniversary of 2016 attack

Overview

The three‑day commemoration in Nice (12–14 July 2026) opened with a silent, white‑clad march of about a thousand people along the Promenade des Anglais, departing from the Lenval Children’s Hospital and passing the permanent “Angel of the Bay” sculpture. Participants carried white roses under a scorching sun; families of victims, local officials, firefighters, OGC Nice representatives and national politicians joined. Georges Bilello, who lost his uncle, said the anniversary feels “like two years, with sadness and anger.”

An inter‑faith service was held on Monday, followed on Tuesday by a secular ceremony attended by President Emmanuel Macron and a drone display of 86 blue light beams. Survivors such as Jean‑Claude Hubler recalled the night’s horror.

Legal proceedings continue. Earlier this year the French Court of Cassation confirmed the prison sentences of the main attackers, while victims’ lawyers press for a separate trial to examine security failures. Renewed police interviews and searches at city hall, the prefecture and police stations keep scrutiny of municipal preparedness ongoing, underscoring persistent demands for accountability and clearer security safeguards.

On 11 July, Macron announced on X that a one‑minute silence would be observed before the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi‑final between France and Spain, a request from Nice mayor Éric Ciotti approved by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The silence was carried out on 14 July, with 86 beams of light illuminating the promenade, an inter‑religious ceremony and public gatherings coinciding with the match. Macron thanked Infantino, said “We will never forget,” and noted former president François Hollande’s expected attendance. The tribute ran alongside the local commemorations, reinforcing the memory of the 86 victims of the July 14 2016 truck attack.
