Paris suburbs shooting investigation targets racist terror motives

A 39-year-old man is under investigation following a shooting in the western Paris suburbs of Trappes and La Verrière on Friday, October 23, 2026. The attacker, identified as Kevin T., opened fire from a vehicle, killing 26-year-old Pengo Bossio Wangi and injuring five others, including a 12-year-old girl who was shot eight times.

French President Emmanuel Macron characterized the incident as a ‘racist terrorist attack,’ noting it as a turning point for the nation. The national counterterrorism prosecution office has opened an investigation into premeditated murder and attempted murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, focusing on whether the attack was motivated by race or religion.

During searches of the suspect's residence in Plaisir, authorities recovered a copy of Adolf Hitler’s ‘Mein Kampf,’ as well as a Bible and a Quran. Investigators also discovered a suspected explosive device consisting of three gas canisters connected to a timer via electrical wires. In the suspect's vehicle, police seized an assault rifle and a tear gas grenade.

Initial questioning revealed the suspect expressed animosity toward Black and Arab individuals, claiming he sought to avenge shopkeepers targeted during previous unrest. The suspect's detention was temporarily suspended for psychiatric evaluation after toxicology reports indicated the presence of cannabis and cocaine in his blood.
