France pledges 100 million euros for Gironde wildfire reconstruction

The French government has announced a major aid package to accelerate reconstruction following devastating megafires in the Gironde and Landes regions. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu pledged over 100 million euros in total support, including 12 million euros immediately released for the two affected departments to begin works.

To expedite the process, the government intends to issue building permits in less than one month. Affected businesses will receive tax exemptions on property and business rates, as well as relief from social security contributions for those facing losses or evacuations. While the government aims for speed, local mayors have expressed skepticism, citing unfulfilled promises from 2022 and calling for improved prevention measures, such as firebreaks and a long-promised aerial base in Mont-de-Marsan.

In response to the disaster, geographer Pauline Vilain-Carlotti has warned against the risks of rebuilding identical structures in highly combustible areas. She argues that rapid reconstruction without addressing urban vulnerabilities could repeat past mistakes. Vilain-Carlotti advocates for a shift toward land sobriety and stricter building limits in the interface between residential zones and forests to mitigate future climate-related risks.
