France 2026 forest fire emergency and reconstruction

Overview

By late July 2026, the French government reported that widespread forest fires were generally under control due to stabilizing weather patterns following an unprecedented heatwave. Since the start of the year, France recorded 13,566 fire incidents, burning over 117,000 hectares—a 20-year record. In the Gironde department, extreme temperatures caused a depot of abandoned World War II artillery shells in Le Porge to detonate on 23–24 July, producing approximately 100 explosions; no injuries were reported, though munitions were scattered across the area.

Following a 42,000-hectare megafire—the largest in the region since 1949—which destroyed 183 houses in Le Porge and forced the evacuation of roughly 220,000 people, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu appointed Anne Coret as the national reconstruction coordinator. To support recovery, the government announced a €12 million aid package for the Gironde and Landes departments, with €10 million allocated specifically to Gironde. A €30 million guarantee fund involving the State, Bpifrance, and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region has also been established. Total support measures, including tax exemptions and social security relief, are expected to exceed €100 million.

As of early September, the crisis has transitioned toward long-term recovery, with the financial impact in Gironde estimated at nearly €9 million. Efforts now focus on road repairs, psychological support, and resident relocation. The Gironde Relogement Solidaire cell has assisted 199 households, 92 of whom have secured temporary housing for one to two years to facilitate reconstruction. Notably, 161 of these cases originate from Le Porge. Social workers continue to address administrative and housing needs in areas including Lège-Cap-Ferret and Lanton.
