Félix Tshisekedi meets Denis Sassou Nguesso to resolve border tensions

DRC President Félix Tshisekedi visited Brazzaville on October 3, 2026, to meet with Republic of the Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso. The summit aimed to ease tensions following an armed clash between security forces from both nations in the Makoloko island zone near Makotipoko and Yumbi.

Tshisekedi expressed deep regrets regarding the incident, describing the use of weapons between the two nations as “erroneous and senseless” given their shared cultural ties. To prevent future escalations, the DRC has instructed its Interior and Defense ministers to coordinate with Congolese counterparts to establish conflict prevention mechanisms. Tshisekedi also announced that the DRC intends to provide financial compensation to victims, pending the results of official investigations.

Separately, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot conducted a visit to the DRC, including the Ituri province, to address the Ebola epidemic. With over 4,000 deaths reported, Barrot pledged substantial French support for the health response and visited treatment centers in Bunia. Discussions also covered bilateral cooperation, security in eastern DRC, and addressing sexual violence related to conflict.
