France prepares new fuel subsidies for commuters

The French government is preparing a successor to the ‘grands rouleurs’ fuel subsidy, which is scheduled to end on September 30. Due to persistently high fuel prices, officials are discussing a new support mechanism for workers who rely on vehicles for their professional activities. Options under consideration include renewing the current €100 indemnity, though specific criteria, amounts, and duration have yet to be finalized.

In a related development regarding commuting costs, employers in France can provide a fuel premium to employees to assist with home-to-work travel. Following a government decision to double the previous limit, this employer-paid premium can reach up to €600 for the year 2026. This specific aid is tax-exempt for the employee and exempt from social security contributions for the employer.
