France promotes precise home energy sizing and reversible heat pumps

Accurate sizing of household energy installations is presented as essential for optimal performance, cost savings and reduced environmental impact. The guidance stresses using real consumption data, seasonal peaks and modern monitoring tools to avoid over‑ or under‑dimensioning equipment, and highlights the added benefits of integrating renewable sources and storage.

In response to rising heat waves, the French government proposes a reduced VAT rate of 5.5% for reversible air‑source heat pumps, which can both cool homes in summer and provide heating in winter. These units are shown to cut overall household electricity use by about 12% despite added cooling demand. Financial incentives, such as energy‑saving certificates (CEE), MaPrimeRénov', and zero‑interest eco‑loans, can cover up to €1,700 of installation costs, making the technology increasingly affordable for French homeowners.
