Rising fuel prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and conflicts involving Iran, are causing significant economic strain in Europe.

In Germany, the fishing industry is under severe pressure as marine gas oil prices have doubled since the start of the year. Many fishing vessels are remaining in port because voyages are no longer profitable. To mitigate this, the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture has announced 4.5 million euros in aid, allowing individual fishers to apply for up to 50,000 euros retroactively. However, the German Fisheries Association has criticized the amount as insufficient, describing it as ‘a drop in the ocean.’

In France, the government has extended and increased targeted fuel subsidies for the fishing, agriculture, and construction sectors until December 31, 2026. Specifically, aid for fishers will rise from 25 to 35 cents per liter. This move aims to preserve economic activity and social stability amid rising costs and potential protests. President Emmanuel Macron has also engaged in diplomatic efforts with leaders in Saudi Arabia and Qatar to secure oil supplies and ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, seeking to reduce energy dependence and stabilize prices.
