France reaches 200,000 public electric vehicle charging points

France has reached a significant milestone in its transition to electric mobility, surpassing 200,000 public electric vehicle charging points as of late July 2026. This figure, distributed across 55,587 charging stations, represents a 15% increase over the previous year and a 100% increase compared to May 2023. Clément Molizon, general delegate of Avere-France, described the achievement as a “historic milestone of electrification.” Despite this progress, the country aims to reach 400,000 points by 2030, meaning the remaining half must be installed within the next three and a half years.

The rise in infrastructure is accompanied by shifts in the automotive market. As of early 2026, electric vehicles accounted for approximately 1.4 million of the 40 million cars in circulation in France. In the new vehicle market, electric cars represented 35% of sales, while hybrids and plug-in hybrids reached 50.05%, significantly outpacing diesel (2.5%) and gasoline (14.4%).

This infrastructure expansion has also given rise to new service roles, such as the “borniste.” These specialists operate primarily at highway service areas, particularly during peak travel periods like summer holidays. Their role is to assist drivers with the charging process, providing technical guidance and reducing the stress associated with electric vehicle range and charging logistics.
