France reaches 200,000 public electric vehicle charging points

France has reached a significant milestone in electric mobility, surpassing 200,000 public electric vehicle charging points as of July 31, 2026. This represents a 15% increase over the previous year. While it took over a decade to reach the 100,000 mark in 2023, the network doubled in just three years. Data from Avere-France and the Ministry of Ecological Transition indicates that nearly half of these public points are located at commercial sites, such as supermarket parking lots, while only 2% are situated along highways.

In the residential sector, the deployment of collective charging infrastructure is also accelerating. As of the second quarter of 2026, 18,289 multi-unit buildings in France are equipped with collective charging stations, a 45% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 43,648 buildings have already approved the installation of such infrastructure.

Despite this growth, challenges remain regarding the quality and availability of the network. Approximately 9% of public charging points experienced unavailability for more than seven consecutive days in July. Experts suggest the focus must now shift from the total number of stations to their strategic placement, power capacity, and consistent functionality.
