France records historic drought in small rivers
The French Office for Biodiversity reported on 1 August that 1,373 small watercourses across France are experiencing flow interruptions or complete drying, an increase of 554 sites in a single month. This represents the most critical situation ever recorded for this period, with 43 % of monitoring stations affected, surpassing the historic drought of 2022 and twice the severity of 2025. The drought, driven by three heatwaves this summer, an ongoing anticyclonic pattern, scarce rainfall and exceptionally high temperatures, is impacting water availability and aquatic biodiversity nationwide, especially along a corridor from Vendée to Grand Est and in the central south of the country.
Météo‑France notes that soil dryness has worsened daily since early June, compounding the stress on river ecosystems. The Office warns that the prolonged lack of water flow threatens the functioning of aquatic habitats and the species that depend on them.
