France reports first Ebola case cured and discharged

France’s health minister Stephanie Rist announced that the country's first identified Ebola patient has been declared recovered and released from hospital after two negative PCR tests. The patient, a humanitarian doctor from the Democratic Republic of Congo, arrived in Paris on 23 June, was isolated at the airport and treated in a French hospital.

Five passengers who had contact with him on the flight were placed under home quarantine for 21 days. The case involved the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no vaccine or specific treatment exists. Health officials said the risk of wider transmission remains low.

The incident marks the first Ebola diagnosis on European soil and follows a large outbreak in the DRC that has killed at least 452 people, with new cases still being confirmed in Kisangani.
