France reports first Ebola case outside Africa in returning humanitarian worker
A humanitarian aid worker who had been operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo was diagnosed with Ebola virus disease after returning to France, marking the first confirmed case of the disease outside the African continent. The patient was immediately transferred to a specialized treatment centre, is reported to be in stable condition, and is being isolated under strict protocols.
France's health ministry stressed that the risk to the general public is very low, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control echoed this assessment. The World Health Organization noted that while the outbreak in the DRC has caused more than 1,000 infections and over 277 deaths, the chance of international spread remains minimal, recalling that fewer than 30 cases have ever been reported outside Africa.
Contact tracing has begun for anyone who may have been exposed to the patient, with potential contacts subject to a 21‑day quarantine and health monitoring. The incident follows a prior case earlier this year in which a U.S. physician contracted Ebola in the DRC and was treated in Germany.
