France reports first imported Ebola case in returning physician
France confirmed its first Ebola case on Wednesday, involving a physician who had recently returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The patient was placed in isolation at a specialized medical facility and is reported to be in stable condition. French health authorities have begun an extensive epidemiological investigation, identifying five passengers who sat near the doctor on the inbound flight and placing them under isolation.
The French Ministry of Health, together with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, assessed the risk of wider transmission in Europe as "very low". The outbreak in eastern DRC, driven by the Bundibugyo strain, has recorded 1,094 confirmed infections and 277 deaths, with 75 healthcare workers infected, 17 of whom have died, according to the World Health Organization. No approved vaccines or specific treatments exist for this strain. The French response underscores rapid detection, strict biosafety measures, and coordinated contact tracing to prevent local spread.
