France reports two heat‑wave drownings, one in Paris canal and another in Vosges river

On 26 June 2026, a man drowned in the Canal Saint‑Martin at the Quai de Valmy in Paris’s 10th arrondissement. He was outside the supervised swimming zone and the permitted hours, and despite rapid intervention by the Paris fire brigade, he could not be revived. Local officials stressed the danger of swimming off‑schedule during the ongoing heat wave, which has already seen 55 drownings across France.

Earlier in the week, a 19‑year‑old man died after entering the Moselle River at Golbey in the Vosges department. Fire‑fighter divers and a drone team were deployed, but the victim was recovered in cardiac arrest after several minutes underwater and could not be resuscitated.
