France: Rising fuel costs drive mobility precariousness and carpooling surge

French drivers are facing significant financial strain due to rising fuel costs and vehicle maintenance expenses. A study by Leocare and Discurv indicates that 78% of French drivers have had to reduce other household spending to afford their vehicles, with 74% now considering a car a luxury.

Fuel prices have reached historic highs, with diesel averaging 2.33 € per liter and SP95-E10 at 2.15 € per liter in mid-September 2026. These increases are driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, pushing Brent crude above $100 per barrel, alongside high domestic taxes. Consequently, an estimated 17 million French adults are experiencing mobility precariousness.

In response to these costs, there has been a surge in carpooling. The platform BlaBlaCar reported a 20% increase in drivers between March and October 2026, with a notable rise in shorter commutes between 50 and 100 kilometers as people seek to mitigate daily travel expenses.
