France energy crisis impacts small businesses and political stability

Soaring fuel and energy prices are creating significant economic and political pressure in France. The crisis, linked to conflict in Iran, has caused diesel prices to reach record highs, with France now ranking as the fifth most expensive country in the EU for motor fuel.

Rural communities and small businesses are bearing the brunt of the costs. In northern France, local bakers report that heating oil costs have surged by 50%, forcing them to absorb losses that impact wages and future investments. Food truck operators and other service providers are also being forced to reduce activities or turn down long-distance jobs due to unsustainable fuel expenses.

The economic strain is also impacting the political landscape ahead of the 2027 presidential election. President Emmanuel Macron faces record-low approval ratings, with only 16% of the electorate expressing confidence in him. The rising cost of living and perceived government failure to protect motorists have created a volatile environment, reviving concerns of social unrest similar to the ‘gilets jaunes’ movement of 2018.
