France schedules 2027 presidential runoff for May 2, raising concerns over May Day clash

The French Council of Ministers confirmed that the first round of the 2027 presidential election will be held on Sunday 18 April and the runoff on Sunday 2 May. The runoff date falls the day after International Workers' Day, a traditional day of large labour protests.

Critics argue that the proximity of the second round to May 1 could bias voters. Former agricultural unionist Max Bauer described the timing as an "arbitrage politique lourd de conséquences" that may undermine the credibility of the democratic process. He warned that the electoral silence period, intended to give voters a calm reflection period, could instead leave the public arena saturated with political messages from the May 1 demonstrations.

Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said the usual rules of electoral silence will apply and urged trust in the police and political forces. Opposition candidate Bruno Retailleau expressed anger, claiming the dates are "pas neutres" and could invite chaos. The government justified the calendar as a compromise to avoid school‑holiday conflicts and promote high turnout.
