France shuts down three nuclear reactors amid severe drought
France's electricity utility EDF halted operations at three nuclear reactors because extreme heat and drought sharply lowered water levels in the Meuse and Moselle rivers. The two reactors at the Chooz plant in the Ardennes region and one reactor at the Cattenom plant in Moselle were taken offline to protect the facilities and comply with environmental water‑use regulations.
EDF also cut output at four other reactors – Bugey 3, Tricastin 4 and Saint‑Alban 1 and 2 – as river flows fell and river‑water temperatures rose. France relies on 57 nuclear reactors for roughly 70 % of its electricity, and the shutdowns prompted the government to seek alternative power sources to meet demand.
The drought coincided with record‑breaking July temperatures, averaging 24.9 °C, the hottest month on record for France, and with 96.5 % of mainland soil classified as dry. The prolonged heat wave and water scarcity have raised concerns about energy security, agricultural impacts, and forest‑fire risk across the country.
