France strengthens prevention measures for farmer mental health distress

French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has announced new measures to combat rising mental health distress among farmers. The initiative follows concerns that the consequences of recent droughts and the threat of bankruptcy are causing significant psychological strain within the agricultural sector.

A new national directory of support mechanisms will be released to help farmers in difficulty. This document will list emergency contact numbers, including suicide prevention lines, and identify various support actors such as the Agricultural Social Mutuality (MSA), chambers of agriculture, and various associations. Available aid includes psychological support, assistance with replacement, and social contribution relief.

The prevention plan utilizes 12,000 volunteer 'sentinels' distributed across the country to identify signs of distress. Additionally, state agents in prefectures will receive a guide to better direct farmers toward appropriate resources. Data from the MSA indicates that over 25,000 calls were engaged between September 1 and October 6.
