France summer tourism shifts toward domestic travel and Brittany

French summer tourism is undergoing a significant shift toward domestic travel and specific coastal regions. According to an Ipsos study, 51% of French citizens plan to stay exclusively within France for the 2026 summer season, a 15-point increase from the previous year.

Market data from Guestadom indicates a move away from major metropolitan areas and the Mediterranean coast toward the Brittany and Manche regions. While occupancy rates in large cities like Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux saw a decline, the Manche-Brittany coastline reached an average occupancy rate of 77%, surpassing the Mediterranean at 71%. This shift is partly driven by economic factors, as the average nightly rate in Brittany is approximately one-third lower than on the Mediterranean coast.

Travel patterns also reflect changing consumer behavior. While the average vacation budget has risen slightly to 1,864 euros, the average duration of stays has decreased from 2.1 to 1.9 weeks. Factors such as climate concerns, including heatwaves and forest fires in the Southwest, and geopolitical considerations are also influencing these domestic travel preferences.
